Polishing your vehicle is one way of prolonging its lifespan and protecting your investment. Furthermore, a well-polished car speaks a lot about you, as the owner. The great thing about polishing your car is that you do not need to spend a fortune. Generally, there are two ways of polishing a car: polishing by hand and polishing using a polishing wheel. To learn how to polish your vehicle like a pro, keep reading.
What you Need
Before you begin polishing your vehicle, ensure you have the following.
Step 1: Wash the Car
This is the first part where you are going to use water, soap, and sponge. Place the car under shade on steady ground and ensure there are no pets or any items near. Mix the water with soap and then start by splashing water on the wheels. Dip the sponge into the soapy water and use it to wash off the dirt from the wheels. It is advisable to start washing the wheels because the soap can damage the car paint if left on for a long time. Once done with the wheels, proceed to clean the other parts of the vehicle.
Always start washing by spraying water since the water helps to remove debris and dirt stuck on the paint as well as other areas. Rinse the vehicle, starting from the top to the bottom while paying extra attention to the wheels since they hold the most dirt. Do not wipe.
Step 2: Polish the Vehicle
As mentioned previously, there are two ways of polishing a vehicle: by hand and by using a polishing wheel. Even though hand polishing a car is time-consuming and takes a lot of effort, it is the best option if you do not know how to use a polishing wheel. Hand polishing your vehicle also helps you reach those areas that a polishing wheel cannot reach.
To hand polish a car; you need a car polisher, polishing pads and microfiber cloths. Take the polishing pad, place a small amount of the polishing compound on it, and polish the car in a circular motion. Once you are done polishing the whole car with the compound, wipe the vehicle down using one of the microfiber towels.
If you are polishing the car using a polishing wheel, ensure the wheel has an attached polishing pad. Additionally, ensure the polishing machine is set on three or four as this is the ideal setting for vehicle polishing. Before you begin, dip the pad in clean water and wing out excess water. The pad needs to stay wet to avoid ruining the car paint.
Using one of the polishing pads, rub some polishing compound on the car’s surface and then turn on the machine. Alternatively, you can rub the polishing compound on the pad attached to the polishing wheel. Polish by moving the polishing wheel sideways then from the front to the back. Repeat this on every part of the car.
Be sure to move to the next part once you get the glossy shine. If you continue to polish an already glossy area, you can easily dull it. You will need to rinse the pad attached to the polishing machine once the compound builds up on it. Do this to avoid messing up the polishing with the excess polishing compound.
There are two types of car polishing compounds: liquid and paste car compounds. Paste compounds require more effort to apply but are economical. On the other hand, liquid compounds are easy to apply. If you are using a paste compound, a polishing machine will make it easier for you to spread it.

Step 3: Wax the Car
Waxing the vehicle after polishing it helps in covering the imperfections on the car surface, as well as the swirl marks. Also, waxing the car helps protect the vehicle’s finish from further damage.
Use a 60: 40 ratio to mix the paste wax and finishing polish accordingly. Take a polishing pad and apply this mixture on the pad. Using a back and forth motion, apply this mix on the car surface while applying a bit of pressure.
Step 4: Remove Excess Wax
Use a microfiber towel to remove excess wax from the surface of the vehicle and then leave it to dry. For a thorough job, you can clean the interior of the car as the wax is drying. This includes the seats, the floor, and any other interior surface.
Polishing your vehicle regularly keeps it looking its best. However, the process can damage the car’s paint if done more frequently. It is best to polish your car every once a year to preserve its color. Also, you can regularly wax after a few months.
